Parent Teacher Conference

Parent Teacher Conferences will take place on November 18th. Please ensure you make an appointment online. If you have any questions about how to book an appointment, please call the school. If the 18th does not work well for you, please let me know so we can work something out. It's important that I talk to all parents.

If you have something specific that you would like to talk to me about, I ask that you let me know ahead of time so I can better prepare.

I look forward to seeing all of you on the 18th!

Our Online Classroom!

We've begun logging in and investigating all the features of our new online classroom. We are in the very early stages, but hope to become expects in navigating our online classroom this term!

Please have your child login at home and show you what we've been doing:

Their login is written on the back of the HPCDSB e-TOOLKIT card in their planner.

Have a Safe Halloween Weekend!

Tomorrow, Friday October 31st, we will celebrate the season by wearing orange and black and having a party in the classroom. The students are welcome to bring treats to share if they wish.

Tomorrow is also the last Waste-Free Friday of the month. I believe our class is in the lead for the most Waste-Free Lunches this month! Remember, the most Waste-Free lunches each month earns a pizza lunch!

Also, please ensure your child has their stuffy at school Monday.

Descriptive Writing: The Stuffy Project

We've been learning to create an image in our readers minds using adjectives, similes and metaphors when describing nouns. We've described apples, SweetTarts and monsters together as a class. Next week, I am asking all students to bring in their favourite stuffed animal. Students will describe their stuffed animal in a descriptive paragraph with an opening and closing sentence. We will produce a rough draft, edit and revise our work, and publish a final draft using the computer.

Descriptive Writing

We began our unit on Descriptive Writing by discussing adjectives:

We then brainstormed sensory words...

Lastly, we applied our knowledge by describing SweetTarts using all five senses!

Have your child practice this skill at home by describing family members, pets, and objects around the house!
Up Next: Similes and Metaphors

October 14th-17th

I hope everyone had a restful weekend!

This week in Grade 3/4...

Grade 4 Retreat: Tuesday Morning
A retreat is a special time for your child, a time to focus in a special way on their relationship to Jesus. The theme of the retreat is: I am the Vine and You are the Branches. John 15:1-8.

Miss Maloney is at a meeting Tuesday afternoon.

Due to the short week, there will be no Word Study this week. We will be practicing: hundred and thousand in class, but there will be no dictation Friday.

October 6-10

We had a great week in Grade 3/4!
We did not complete our Words of the Week quiz because our Grade 4's had CCAT Testing - our Grade 3's spent the day with Mr. Devereaux!
We will do our quiz on Monday

Looking forward..

Our school will be collecting gently used Coats, and Food for Thanksgiving.

Monday - Bring in pasta and you get to wear a hat!
Tuesday - Bring in canned food to participate in backwards day!
Wednesday - Bring in a non-edible (paper towels, toothpaste, etc.) and participate in Wacky Hair Day!
Thursday - Bring in your favourite non perishable (favourite cereal) and participate in PJ Day!

If you are able, please donate to our food drive. We will be making up baskets of food to give to families in need in our school community. Thank you!

For I was hungry and you gave me food, I was thirsty and you gave me drink, I was a stranger and you welcomed me.

Clip Chart Rewards!

So many students have earned rewards for reaching the top of our Clip Chart 5 times.
Great Work Grade 3/4! Keep it up!

Liam & Zach chose to bring in a stuffy to read with for the day.

Medieval Times

We've been comparing different aspects of Medieval Times with current day in Canada. We are discovering that while a lot has changed, a lot has stayed the same.

Here, we used a Venn Diagram to compare Entertainment of today and Entertainment during Medieval Times:

Owen argued that we should change "Jousting Tournament" from Entertainment During Medieval Times to a form of Entertainment that we do today as well because he does jousting in Karate. We decided as a class to put it in the middle of our Venn Diagram. Great thought Owen!

Clip Chart

Our Classroom Clip Chart!

Each student has their name written on a clip attached to the pictured chart. Students start each day Ready to Learn. From there, they can move up and/or down the chart. Listening quietly, getting started on a task right away, helping a classmate, being especially kind are all examples of ways to move up the Clip Chart. Not listening or following instructions, being unkind or disrespectful are examples of ways to move down the Clip Chart.

If you are at Super Student at the end of the day, you will receive a sticker on your clip.

Janna chose - Sit at the Teacher's Desk for the Day.
A popular choice in Grade 3/4!
Once you have 5 stickers on your clip, you may choose a reward coupon!

Moving down the chart issues students a friendly reminder to Think About It before teacher's choice. Teacher's Choice varies and may be missing a few minutes of recess to discuss the behaviour or writing an apology note. Parent Contact will occur if the behaviour continues. A note will be sent home or a phone call will be made at this point.

Lunches

ST. AMBROSE IS A PEANUT FREE SCHOOL

We have a student in our class who has a nut allergy.
Please be careful when packing your child's lunch.

HEALTHY SNACK
Students are asked to eat a healthy first snack at 10:15am. A great healthy first snack would be a fruit, vegetable, yogurt, etc.

FRIDAY WASTE-FREE LUNCH
Our School ECO-CLUB is encouraging waste-free lunches. Every Friday we record the number of waste-free lunches. The ECO-TEAM will be providing pizza to the class with the most waste-free lunches. Let's do our best to earn that pizza lunch!

Welcome to Grade 3/4!

It's been a busy couple of weeks in Grade 3/4!

We've enjoyed getting to know each other very much!
All our "Get to Know" pages will be displayed in the hallway during the Open House!
Learn our favourite: subject, colour, food, animal and MORE!

In our classroom we are kind, responsible and inclusive!
The students consciously ensure everyone in our class feels respected, valued and included through our actions and words.

I feel truly blessed to have such kindhearted children in my classroom.

I look forward to a wonderful year filled with new experiences, friends and learning!
